I’m a sinner. I’ve broken commandments. Some, repeatedly. I know that “Bible Thumpers” and the money hungry, hypocritical preachers can turn a person away. They have always had the same off-putting effect on me.

My humble advice is this. Look at the 10 Commandments. If you have problems with faith, look beyond the first three and read the last seven. They make good sense, even if you aren’t sure about God. Get your Bible {if you don’t own one click here} and read Proverbs 10. If that makes sense to you, start at Proverbs 1 and read through them all.

I prefer – for beginners – the New International Version 1984 edition. The words have been modernized and it is much easier to follow and understand. Once you become more familiar with the Word, I recommend the Dake's Study Bible. I also suggest reading the New Testament first.

You do not have to align yourself with a particular religious sect, IMO. And while it is encouraged to attend church, the Bible says,
“But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you” ~ Matt 6:6
Please do not let man, with all of his worldly flaws, prejudices and interpretations  keep you away from the Word of God. Read it yourself, with no middle man to ‘translate’.
It is between you and God, it was never between you and them anyway.
